The barrel cactus is iconic of the Sonoran Desert but it grows alongside the Chihuahuan Desert grassland in Cochise County Arizona. Never use this cactus as a source of water especially since it and all other cactus are protected in Arizona. In Mexico where barrels are more common people do use this cactus to make a sweet. It is sometimes used to find out which way is south.
