August 3 - 6, 2022
Registration closes on July 15, 2022
The 31st Southwest Wings Summer Birding and Nature Festival will be held August 3-6, 2022. Registration opened on April 1 and closes on July 15, 2022. This family friendly event is our main one with expertly guided field trips, pre-festival Jamboree, free programs, including some new ones just for kids, exhibitors, vendors, live animals, Keynote Buffet Dinner and Silent Auction.
The small-group guided field trips will be both Car Caravan style, in participants' own vehicles, as well as in Group Vans to more distant or less accessible by car-caravan locations.
This year the keynote speaker will be Sheri Williamson with a fabulous talk on hummingbirds, from right here in Sierra Vista - the Hummingbird Capital of the United States! Her talk is entitled "Hummingbirds: Their Past, Their Present, Our Future".
(Note - you must register for the festival to attend the Keynote Dinner).
Don't miss the Silent Auction to be held during the Keynote Dinner to raise funds for future festivals. Items being auctioned are nature-themed artwork, books, clothing, and much more. All items can be viewed here on our website and during the first day of the vendor hall open hours on Wednesday, Aug 3 and Thursday Aug 4 before the Keynote Dinner.
Winning bidder will be announced at the end of the Keynote dinner.
On Saturday, August 6, Rick Taylor will be signing advance copies of his new book, Birds of Arizona.
The free program of talks will cover a wide range of topics from speakers including Diane Hadley, Justin Schmidt, Rick Taylor and Rick Wright.
Vendors include the Huachuca Art Association, and also Jay's Bird Barn with their optics and accessories and festival sponsor, Swarovski Optik, will have its demonstration trailer on site so you can try out the very latest equipment.

Southwest Wings will adhere to the following protocols for protection against catching Covid, and at present these include:
For participation on Group Van Trips, Covid 19 proof of vaccinations and boosters is required and a touchless temperature check will be given before each departure with mask wearing required when traveling in the vehicles.
Vans (and Car Caravan guide's car) will be stocked with hand sanitizers, antiseptic wipes, first aid kits and extra masks.
Vans and common areas will be cleaned and sanitized daily.
When birding outside the need for social distancing will be honored.
Shared scopes are to be sanitized between views.
We will continue to evaluate and enhance these policies as time goes on and as public health recommendations are updated.
GROUP VAN TRIPS will be limited to eight participants (plus guide) and will meet and depart from Cochise College Sierra Vista Campus. Lunch and water are included in van trips and sandwich filling can be chosen when registering.
SELF-DRIVE CAR CARAVAN TRIPS will be limited to a maximum of four cars (plus the guide's) and eight participants (plus guide), unless stated otherwise. Each car caravan will have a set meeting point and time to meet your guide. Out of consideration for all trip members, the guide and the scheduled itinerary plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before start time to avoid any disappointments. Cars will follow the guide's lead car to each birding location. Your guide will make sure that phone numbers are exchanged and in case of becoming separated you will be told the next stop on your itinerary. On car caravan trips lunch and personal water are not included. Be sure to bring plenty of your own water, and for full-day trips you will also need to bring your own lunch.
